The Origins and beliefs of Shia and Sunni Islam Essay Example for Free

The Origins and beliefs of Shia and Sunni Islam Essay During the first 30 years after the Prophets death Muslims were governed by four khalifahs who were outstanding men chosen by the community for their closeness to the Prophet and their good characters. They were unselfish, tolerant, and well versed in the Quran, and they had been the Prophets dearest friends. They had learned from him all his ways and attitudes. These first four khalifahs were known as the Rashidun or rightly-guided or orthodox. The word khalifah means successor. Instead of living like princes, they lived very simple lives as the Prophet had done, in close touch with the people. They were renowned for their ragged and torn clothing, and their refusal to take any luxuries for themselves. Khalifahs were the most important people in the Muslim state, but were horrified if anyone started to think of them as kings they were simply servants. Only God was King. The first khalifah was Abu Bakr, who ruled from 632-4 CE. Before he died he elected Umar to be the next khalifah. Ali and his supporters thought this was wrong, but refused to bear a grudge. Umar ruled from 634-44 CE, after being stabbed (by Firuz, a Persian slave) six times in the back whilst he was praying. Uthman was the next khalifah to be elected, after Ali had refused the position. He was a kind and gentle man, but tended to elect many friends and relatives to key positions. When he was 80 many Muslims, particularly the supporters of Ali, thought that he should abdicate, but he refused to do so. Soon afterwards, while Uthman was at prayer, he was killed by a group of angered Egyptians. He had ruled from 644-56 CE. Finally, 24 years after the Prophets death, the khalifate passed to Ali. He ruled from 656-61 CE. He was famous for his extreme piety and faithful transmission of the Prophets sayings. His supporters thought of him as the Conscience of Islam. Alis appointment as khalifah was opposed by Uthmans cousin Muawiya, who was supported by the Prophets surviving wife, Aishah. Muawiya and Aishah demanded avenge for the murder of Uthman, but Ali didnt grant this. There was a battle, the Battle of Siffin, where Muawiya and Ali agreed on peace, but somehow Ali had been tricked and Muawiya was announced as khalifah. A group of Muslims, the Kharijites, were so outraged by the incident decided to end the impurity by killing them both. Some people felt right from the beginning that Ali should have been the Prophets successor. They were not content to see power going into the hands of the old chief family of Makkah which had so recently persecuted them and had always been jealous of the power of the Prophet. They claimed that the Prophet had always trained Ali to take over. Ali deputized for the Prophet in his lifetime and was the father of the Prophets grandsons. They claimed that those who had elected Abu Bakr insisted he was the Prophets choice, and was the senior male Muslim leader. However, the supporters of Ali still felt the khalifate should have stayed in the line of the Prophet and Khadijah, and now that Fatimah and Ali were dead, they insisted the next leader should be Alis son Hasan. Muawiya would not agree, and in the end Hasan came to an understanding that the khalifate would revert to his family only after Muawiyas death. However, when Hasan died (some claim he was poisoned) Muawiya made his own son Yazid the heir. Those who supported the Prophets descendants became known as the Shiat Ali or Party of Ali. They are now called Shiites. They refused to accept the first three khalifahs and claimed Ali was really the first, followed by the Prophets grandsons Hasan and Husayn. Shia Muslims believe that leadership (the position of khalifah) should be exclusive to the family of the Prophet. Sunnah is the Arabic word for custom or authority, and Sunni Muslims regard themselves as the true followers of the Sunnah or Way of the Prophet. They insist that the Prophet had intended elections so that the best man would succeed, and not to start a family line of rulers, like Kings. Sunnis are the major branches of Islam. About 90 percent of Muslims are Sunni. They base their standards of their faith on the Quran plus the Hadiths of the Prophet and the laws based upon them. They believe that leadership should be decided by a democratic election based on a majority vote. The Shiites, on the other hand, are a smaller group around 10 percent of modern Muslims but with a tendency to devotion that borders on fanaticism. The number of Shiite Muslims is increasing as people in many developing countries are reacting against the decadence of the modern world. Shiism is the state religion of Iran, and is rapidly increasing in strength in Pakistan, Iraq, India, the Yemen and the Lebanon. A summary of the principal teachings and aims of the Ayatollah Khomeini Islam to Ayatollah Khomeini is the noble warriors religion. It is of those who seek justice and righteousness, demand independence and liberty, and struggle to prevent the unbeliever as well as the tyrant from exercising power over the Muslim. He believes Islam is not just a code which governs the moral conduct of an individual, but also a set of rules and regulations which provide for every need and all requirements. He considers the introduction of the modern education, the adoption of constitutional parliamentary systems of government, and the promotion of Westernised criminal codes as nothing but deliberate means to undermine Islam, by encouraging the faithful to abandon their religion. Khomeini calls on the Muslims to emulate the example of the Prophet and the first three Imams. He demands their transformation into holy warriors to save Islam from the dangers confronting the religion. He encourages his students, as the new soldiers, to believe that theirs is a total system and to reject the notion that there is a similarity between Islam and Christianity. Khomeini thinks that Muhammad, and Imam Ali, were preachers, rulers, and administrators. He believes in succession, and also in the necessity of appointing a successor to the Prophet. The successor must be a preacher and a jurist, and must ensure the obedience of the community to the Quran. To conclude, Khomeini states that there must be a state based on Muslim legal philosophy. The aspects of Western life religion, in general, and Islam, in particular, should resist or reform. In the modern world one cannot do all the things which are demanded by ancient religions. Islam is a prime example of this. How can a law laid down fourteen centuries ago in the Middle East meet all the complex demands and pressures of modern technological civilization? Muslims dont think of it like this, no Muslim can accept the idea of a society without God. Muslims must submit to God, and that means they must not choose which of the revealed laws they will or will not keep. How can they judge which laws are more important than others? Only God knows the full reasoning behind them. The Muslim rules of behavior are split up into five categories. Firstly fard, or wajib, which are things which must be done. Secondly mandub, or mustahab, which are recommended actions. Thirdly mubah, which are actions to be decided by conscience. Next is makruh, which are disapproved actions. Finally haram, which are things never to be done. Most of modern life falls in the mubah section. Whatever is not actually forbidden is permitted, under the guidance of your conscience. If an action is harmful to yourself or anyone else, it cannot be recommended by a Muslim. If qiyas (principles worked out by analogy) and ijtihad (exercise of individuals opinion) are used properly, it remains always possible to offer fresh thinking on past decisions. Also it is possible to keep pace with the ever-changing world. Modernist Muslims feel that this is vital, and that the reason for the past stagnation of Islam was the over-emphasizing of and clinging to the decisions of the madhab imams of the five classical schools, and the neglecting of todays great scholars and thinkers. Other reformers are known as fundamentalists because they seek to keep nothing but the original teachings and reject all modern interpretations as innovations (bida). There are many Muslim laws which need to be resisted or reformed. Some of these are based on a Muslims manners, for there is a great emphasis on showing consideration to others. The laws say that Muslims must pay close attention to cleanliness. They are expected not to be even the slightest bit dirty at any times. Before and after sexual intercourse they are expected to wash. With the amount of washing it is said is needed, it would be very hard to do anything but wash in the modern day, with pollution. This therefore needs to be changed. There laws about table manners are fine, and most are the same as used all over the world. The way in which Muslim women dress is in a very modest way, thus many traditional costumes are not acceptable for they are to revealing. It is in fact a good idea for it stops Muslim women from flirting with, or attracting, men. This stops the chances of adultery. Passions, if not under control, can cause endless hurt and disturbance. Muslim men are expected to be modest too, and always to be clean and smart. Muslims have many food laws. In these there are listed some unlawful foods which are forbidden, these are called haram. These are any products made from a pig. Meat containing blood. Meat from an animal which dies of itself due to disease or other natural causes. Any flesh-eating animal. Any animal which has been strangled, beaten to death, killed by a fall, gored by another animal, or partially eaten by another animal. Or finally any animal sacrificed to idols. These laws greatly affect the Muslims ability to mix socially with non-Muslim neighbours, since nearly all meat in the West has been killed by electrocution or firing a bolt into an animals brain, and is therefore forbidden to Muslims. They should not buy meat from a market unless it is known to be halal (this is the Muslim word for meat which they can lawfully eat). Many Muslim children do not eat school dinners because of their food restrictions. Another of the Muslims problems is schooling. There are four main areas which these problems fall into. Immodest dress, especially in PE lessons; not separating boys and girls after the age of ten; sexual instruction in the classroom; and religious instruction that is either Christian or Jewish (i.e. Bible based) or Islam presented in an incorrect manner. There are several things which Muslims consider to be wrong with these. It is because of the lack of schools which provide the rules and facilities needed for Muslims, that many Muslim schools have been started. One of the major difficulties for a Muslim is there ability to find time to pray. Some employers are not sympathetic if workers want to break off for a few moments to pray. Often there is no private place for them to go, or facilities to wash with first. This makes life very hard for Muslims, and I therefore believe the laws about praying should be slightly more lenient. Overall one can see that Muslims confront many clashes between their laws and the way of the western civilization. For them to get on more easily in the modern world they must reform or resist some of their strict laws and traditions.

Implications of Alcohol Abuse

Implications of Alcohol Abuse There are hundreds of car accidents and drinking related deaths every year due to irresponsible drinking. Many countries around the world face this problem with an abuse of alcohol. Alcohol in the hands of younger people may be a disaster, causing increasing crime related activity and harm, but the other hand is a more mature drinking age forcing delinquents to do illegal activities to obtain booze and drink more irresponsibly? These are questions that need to be answered through a research study in order to decrease the negativity associated with alcohol. The research will take place through the FIU library, Cypress Bay library and other various libraries using ebook references, providing statistics about consumption and its crimes. The purpose of this study is to find out which drinking age seems to be more appropriate for consumption which compares drinking ages among different countries to the negative consequences associated with them. The independent variable will be defined as the various ages of consumption among different countries. The dependent variable will be defined generally as the negative impacts of alcohol consumption, and the intervening variables are using the same age group, which will be 16 to 24, throughout the research study. I will be conducting a literature review to complete my study, which will involve me analyzing previous data collected and analyzing what that data means. I will analyze graphs about amount of alcohol consumed and alcohol related car accidents to find a correlation among the data and conclude what age is safer. Due to different cultures and environments, it may be difficult to include this factors into the study, as these factors will affect the validity of my findings. I conduct this study in the hopes it will further educate government officials to the importance of finding the right age of consumption in order to reduce fatalities and crimes, not only in the US but all around the world. This study will hopefully further the knowledge of potential dangers due to age restrictions to the general public. When concerning the United States, there seems to be statistical evidence that increasing the drinking age in 1984 has improved overall well being of people. During the 20th century, MLDA laws were drastically altered in the United States. Beginning in July 1988, the standard drinking age has been 21 throughout all of the United States. According to Surveys regarding alcohol consumption amongst high schoolers and young adults, drinking has declined since the 1970s, and the decline spiked in the early 90s. Looking at drivers that were killed between the ages 16 to 20, percentages with positive BACs went down from 61% in 1982 to 31% in 1995. Many studies conducted that analyzed the effects of drinking age changes revealed that an MLDA of 21 reduced alcohol consumption, alcohol abuse, drinking and driving, and alcohol related car accidents among youths. Still there is much underage drinking that still goes on, but increased enforcement of drinking age laws can limit underage drinking. R ecent attempts to lower drinking age to 18 and use alcohol education as a means of condemning misuse of alcohol have proven to show no evidence that education programs can have any effect on people, compared to the effect that the MLDA-21 has on people[1]. In regards to driving concerns, studies strongly suggest reducing the drinking age to 18 will dramatically increase driving under the influence and alcohol related car accidents resulting in death. One of the most favorable advantages of increasing the drinking age requirement was to reduce car accidents. When analyzing drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 years, the percentage testing for positive BACs went down from 61 in 1982, all the way to 31 in 1995. In a 1975 study, it showed that reducing the consumption age to 18 in two U.S. states and a Canadian province increased deadly crashes among individuals below 21 years old, juxtaposed with contiguous states where drinking ages werent altered. A 2001 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that gathered the results of 33 studies reported 10 to 16 percent differences in end results for drivers 18-20 years old in alcohol related accidents. Amount of accidents went up when drinking ages were dropped and declined whe n ages went up. The impacts were unfluctuating during follow-up time periods ranging from 7 months to years. According to national roadside breath surveys, people driving at night on the weekends show an estimated 74% fall in blood alcohol concentrations of 0.05 percent or more when looking at individuals below the age of 21 during the period of 1973 to 1996. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration agrees that drinking age requirements should remain the same, stating earlier this year that adopting 21 policies in all states has saved more than 26,000 lives since the mid-1970s, including 4,441 lives amid the past 5 years. This finding is based on studies that found an average reduction of 13 percent in deadly crashes involving drivers 18-20 years old when drinking ages were increased. On the other hand, studies published by the Institute and others in 1983 found reductions in crashes regarding young drivers who were impacted by states going back to the age of 21. Many stud ies since then confirms the lifesaving benefits of 21 as the minimum drinking age. For example, in 1999 New Zealand reduced the consumption age from 20 to 18. A study that was published during 2006 revealed that accident injury rates among 18-19 year old men were 12 percent higher than expected after the policy was altered, based on comparisons with 20-24 year olds. The respective increase was even bigger for 18-19 year old females, at 51 percent, and higher injury rates also were seen for 15-17 year olds[2]. The MLDA or Minimum Legal Drinking age laws state the age at which a person can legally purchase and consume alcohol. The current MLDA in the United States is 21 years of age, however prior to the National Minimum Drinking Act of 1984, the legal drinking age varied from state to state. After every state acquired an age 21 MLDA, alcohol consumption during the prior month declined among individuals ages 18 to 20 from 59 percent in 1985 to 40 percent in 1991. Drinking declined dramatically for people ages 21 to 25 after the states adopted the age 21 MLDA, going from 70 percent in 1985 to 56 in 91. States that increased their legal drinking age to 21 saw a 16 % average decrease in car accidents. The chances for dropping out of high school were 13 times greater for states with a legal age of 18 in comparison with states with an age of 21[3]. The drinking age limit is based on research that reveals that young people act differently to alcohol than adults do. Teens get drunk twice as fast as adults do and do not know their limits of when to stop. Teens instinctively overdo drinking and binge more than adul ts do. By enforcing the drinking age of 21, it reduces car accidents, protects youths maturing brain from being negatively affected, and keeps younger people safer overall. Back when states had a lower legal drinking age in the U.S., the underage drinking problem was worse. Prior to the enactment of the MLDA of 21 in all states, underage age intoxicated drivers were involved in over twice as many fatal crashes as today. Although some may argue that since Europe has a lower drinking age they appear to be far better off than the United States. However, Studies show that Europe has worse problems in regards to drinking alcohol; Compared to America, Europe has more underage drinking, sexual abuse, injuries and problems in school due to alcohol. Due to easier access to alcohol in Europe, it increases the proportion of youths who drink alcohol in Europe[4]. Contrasted and an extensive variety of different projects and endeavors to lessen drinking among youngsters, expanding the legitimate age for buy and utilization of liquor to 21 seems to have been the best push to date (contrast examines condensed in Table I and studies refered to in surveys of other avoidance endeavors, for example, Moskowitz [1989] and Gorman and Speer [1996]). The extent of impacts of t he age-21 arrangement may seem little, especially in studies utilizing frail research plans and having low levels of measurable power. Be that as it may, even unassuming impacts connected to the whole populace of youth result in vast societal advantages. For instance, the National Highway Traffic Security Administration, utilizing a normal evaluated lessening in movement fatalities because of the legitimate drinking time of 13%, ascertains that the age-21 strategy averted 846 passings in 1997 and kept an aggregate of 17,359 passings since 1975 (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1998). An expansive extent of investigations of the MLDA found a factually critical, converse relationship between the MLDA and liquor utilization and liquor related issues (48% of the higher quality reviews). Just a modest number of studies found a measurably huge, positive relationship between the MLDA and different results (1% of the higher quality reviews). Countless found no measurably noteworthy relationship. Notwithstanding contrasts in nature of research plan and examinations, a few different components may represent changeability in results over considers, including size of test and degree of progress in strategy. The ability to identify a factually huge impact is straightforwardly affected by the span of the example. In a few states, the MLDA was raised just 1 year, from age 20 to age 21; in different states it was raised from age 18 to 21. Investigations of strategy changes that influence littler fragments of the populace might be less inclined to identify impacts just due to lessened factual power while examining less information. Given potential plan and investigation constraints in any single review, the huge extent of MLDA studies that found a huge backwards association with different results gives solid support for the adequacy of the MLDA. It is hard to gauge precisely the impacts of the drinking age particularly on undergrads. Tragically, most reviews concentrating on undergrads have been based on weaker cross-sectional outlines or constrained nonprobability tests. Just 9% of the school particular reviews (6 of 64) utilized a higher quality research plan. Of these higher quality thinks about, none found a factually huge opposite relationship between the MLDA and utilization or liquor related issues. Moreover, of these 6 investigations, 4 incorporated an example of understudies at just a single college. Despite the fact that it is conceivable that the age-21 strategy has been less successful on school grounds than among the general youth populace, existing exploration plainly does not propose that the age -21 MLDA has expanded issues among school understudies. In any case, more reviews that utilization powerful research plans would be expected to evaluate precisely the impact of the MLDA particularly on school grounds. Also, investigations of potential intervening elements on grounds are too required. For instance, how well are MLDA laws upheld on school grounds? How effortlessly can underage understudies get liquor close by grounds? In the event that one accept that the MLDA is less viable on school grounds, maybe it is because of careless requirement and especially simple access to liquor by underage youth in such settings. At long last, regardless of advance in late decades, generally youth keep on having access to liquor, most drink at any rate once in a while, whats more, a significant part routinely get to be distinctly inebriated. The social expenses from wounds, passings and harm related with underage drinking stay high. The advantages of the lawful drinking age of 21 have happened with almost no dynamic authorization in many ranges. Just by expanding implementation levels and discouraging grown-ups from offering on the other hand giving liquor to minors, significantly more wounds and passi ngs identified with liquor use among youth are probably going to be kept every year[5]. On the Contrary, lowering the age might not be a bad idea also, considering the limited impact that raising the legal age has on society and its individuals. Raising the MLDA does not stop underage people from consuming alcohol. Implementing a higher drinking age forces underage consumers to drink in secrecy and, in adolescents cases, without adult supervision from their elders. Roughly 90% of the drinking done by people between 18 to 20 years old is done in an irresponsible manner, that being binge drinking. Lowering the MLDA to 18 would allow for parents to teach their children how to drink responsibly, as opposed to drinking in private and being exposed to unsafe drinking habits. In the United States, a person is legally considered an adult at 18, making them liable for their own being and the choices that they make. If an adult is allowed to handle all the responsibilities and decisions for themselves such as entering the armed forces, voting, marrying, and even serving the jury, it is irrational for a so called adult not to be able to make the conscious and responsible decision for themselves to consume alcohol[7]. The legitimate drinking age ought to be brought down to around 18 or 19 and youthful grown-ups permitted to drink in controlled situations, for example, eateries, bars, bars and authority school and college capacities. In these circumstances capable drinking could be instructed through part displaying and instructive projects. Develop and sensible drinking conduct would be normal. This feeling is based upon research that I have been included in for more than a quarter century school age youth and the historical backdrop of savoring the United States and different societies. In spite of the fact that the lawful buy age is 21 years old, a larger part of understudies under this age devour liquor yet in a reckless way. This is on the grounds that drinking by these young is viewed as a tempting illegal natural product, an identification of insubordination to expert and an image of adulthood. As a country we have attempted preclusion enactment twice in the past for controlling flippant dri nking issues. This was amid National Prohibition in the 1920s and state disallowance amid the 1850s. These laws were at long last canceled in light of the fact that they were unenforceable and on the grounds that the reaction towards them brought about other social issues. Today we are rehashing history and committing similar errors that happened previously. Restriction did not work then and disallowance for youngsters less than 21 years old is not working at this point. The displaying of the present laws is promptly observed among college understudies. Those less than 21 years old will probably be overwhelming here and there called orgy consumers (devouring more than 5 drinks in any event once per week). For instance, 22% of all understudies under 21 contrasted with 18% more than 21 years old are substantial consumers. Among consumers just, 32% of under age contrasted with 24% of legitimate age are substantial consumers. Explore from the mid 1980s until the present has demonstrated a ceaseless abatement in drinking and driving related factors which has parallel the nations, and furthermore college understudies, diminish in per capita utilization. Be that as it may, these decreases began in 1980 under the steady gaze of the national 1987 law which com manded states to have 21 year old liquor buy laws. The reduction in drinking and driving issues are the aftereffect of many variables and not only the ascent in buy age or the diminished per capita utilization. These include: training concerning tipsy driving, assigned driver programs, expanded safety belt and air sack utilization, more secure vehicles, bring down speed limits, free taxi administrations from drinking foundations, and so forth. While there has been an abatement in per capita utilization and engine vehicle crashes, sadly, amid this same day and age there has been an INCREASE in different issues identified with overwhelming and flighty drinking among school age youth. The greater part of these announced practices indicated little change until AFTER the 21 year old law in 1987. For instance from 1982 until 1987 around 46% of understudies revealed retching subsequent to drinking. This hopped to more than half after the law change. Noteworthy increment were likewise found for different factors: playing hooky in the wake of drinking hopped from 9% to very nearly 12%; missing class due to aftereffect went from 26% to 28%; getting lower review due to drinking ascended from 5% to 7%; and been in a battle in the wake of drinking expanded from 12% to 17%. These practices are files of unreliable drinking. This expansion in harsh drinking conduct is because of underground drinking outside of grown-up supervision in understudy rooms and lofts were same age people gather and due to absence of learning of dependable drinking practices. Based upon the way that our present preclusion laws are not working, the requirement for option comes closer from the experience of other, and more antiquated societies, who dont have these issues should be attempted. Gatherings, for example, Italians, Greeks, Chinese and Jews, who have few drinking related issues, tend to share some normal qualities. Liquor is neither seen as a toxic substance or an enchantment intense, there is next to zero social weight to drink, flighty conduct is never endured, youngsters take in at home from their folks and from different grown-ups how to deal with liquor in a capable way, there is societal accord on what constitutes capable drinking. Since the 21 year old drinking age law is not working, and is counterproductive, it profits us as a country to change our present restriction law and to educate capable drinking systems for the individuals who expended mixed refreshments[8]. On April 14, 1982, President Reagan set up the Presidential Commission Against Drunk Driving (PCDD). This commission built up 39 suggestions to control what was seen to be a plastered driving pandemic. Taken together, the 39 proposals were expected to be far reaching approach with an object ive of lessening the quantity of liquor related passings on the countrys roadways. Proposal number eight concerned the Minimum Legal Purchasing Age, and said that all states ought to raise their drinking age to 21, keeping in mind that they lose a specific rate of government roadway dollars. In spite of the fact that the objective of the Commissions proposals was planned to be inebriated driving over the grown-up populace, the unbalanced measure of consideration paid to building up 21 as the national least drinking age moved the countrys concentration to youngsters drinking. Select enthusiasm for raising the drinking age underestimated the impact of the rest of the 38 proposals, among them recommendations to execute youth instruction programs, build up an enormous open data crusade, and to expand punishments for indicted plastered drivers. Regarding liquor hindered driving and related fatalities, a current NHTSA concentrate that looked at DUI laws in the United States to those in pr actically identical countries, for example, the European Union States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Brazil, found that the United States had the most noteworthy extent of activity fatalities that were liquor related among the 12 nations detailing information. A similar review found that the United States has the most elevated lawful BAC confine for hindered driving-.10 at the season of production (2000)- and generally careless requirement when contrasted with countries like Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, and Spain where obligatory irregular breath testing and temperance checkpoints were accounted for to be visit and common. The legitimate drinking age of all nations in the report was 18, with Japan and Canada being the main special cases. Japan sets 20 as its legitimate farthest point, while the lawful savoring age Canada is 19 in all areas aside from Alberta, Quebec, and Manitoba, where individuals can drink legitimately at age 18. In both the here and now and the long haul, liquor impacts the juvenile mind in courses not quite the same as the grown-up cerebrum. Puberty, extensively characterized as the second decade of life, neurologically stretches out until the age of 25. In a condition of liquor hindrance (here and now impacts), the immature cerebrum is debilitated in routes like the grown-up mind however to contrasting degrees. In different creature explores, the immature mind demonstrates more prominent liquor prompted weakness of memory recovery and engraving abilities than the grown-up cerebrum. This is to state that the immature mind is more regrettable at recollecting things while intoxicated, and recalling things that happened while tipsy. Contrastingly, the pre-adult mind is less weakened in engine ability control than the grown-up cerebrum. That is, the youthful cerebrum keeps up a more elevated amount of adjust, response time, and deftness while under an indistinguishable level of weakness from a grown-up mind. Since it is unscrupulous to supply liquor to those beneath the savoring age a lab setting, specialists are compelled to utilize rats for exploratory trials. Any use of these discoveries to people is fundamentally to some degree theoretical. Concerning long haul impacts, exploratory rodent lab confirm demonstrates that rehashed introduction to liquor amid youthfulness prompts to enduring shortfalls in psychological capacities, including learning and memory. Comes about because of human reviews are less evident. Cerebrum outputs and estimations of liquor influenced regions of the mind in youthful young people with liquor mishandle scatters indicate bring down rates of mind action amid memory errands and less created mind structures than in non-drinking peers. In spite of the fact that the outcomes are disturbing, they are steady with discoveries from more established, non-juvenile subjects. Subsequently, the intellectual deficiencies credited to liquor use in teenagers are demonstrative not of liquors extraordinary impact amid young people, but rather of the outcomes of overwhelming liquor utilize all the more by and large. Many reviews affirm that since the drinking age was institutionalized at 21 in 1984, the general number of liquor related fatalities for those matured 18-20 has diminished. In any case, this example of decay started in the mid 1970s, years before section of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. In spite of the fact that associations like MADD case the 21 year-old drinking age has spared more than 21,000 lives since the mid-1980s, its is difficult to attest a circumstances and end results relationship between the adjustment in the law and the decrease in liquor related movement fatalities; numerous different elements, for example, more secure vehicles and more stringent tipsy driving laws have assumed an unquestionably imperative part (see beneath). A few researchers have additionally introduced the imperative contention that while passings out and about may have declined pointedly among 18-20 year-olds in the years taking after establishment of the 21 year-old drinking age, the slowest rate of decay and most prominent number of yearly fatalities is seen every year in the 21-24 age amass. In 2002, for instance, twice the same number of 21 year-olds kicked the bucket in liquor related car collisions as 18 year-olds. Such a stunning measurement says a lot: an arrangement that cases to spare a large number of every year may essentially be re-appropriating passings over the life cycle to the time when it gets to be distinctly lawful to drink liquor-age 21. Amid the 1990s, authoritative changes, expanded law requirement, harder indictment and discipline, exceedingly obvious promotion, and state funded training were all parts of the war on intoxicated driving. Other administrative changes, for example, compulsory safety belt laws, bring down BAC limits, and stricter principles on vehicle security benchmarks can likewise be credited. The decrease in liquor related fatalities found in the United States in the course of the last over two decades is inferable from a blend of components, including yet not restricted to more secure vehicles, expanded open consciousness of the threat of smashed driving, utilization of assigned drivers-a term that did not exist in the before the drinking age was raised-balance checkpoints, zero-resistance laws for youthful drivers, and by and large more stringent implementation of liquor disabled driving laws have prompted to the lessening found in rates of inebriated driving and related passings. Truth be told, a considerable lot of these changes can be followed to the 39 suggestions introduced by the Presidential Commission Against Drunk Driving in 1982. As indicated by an investigation by NHTSA, seat straps and air sacks have had an immeasurably more prominent impact in counteracting fatalities than the 21 year-old drinking age; for instance, in 2002 and 2003 alone, more lives out an d about were spared by the utilization of seat straps and airbags than there were in the whole history of the 21 year-old drinking age. Mediations in the course of recent years have succeeded not just in decreasing the frequency of disabled driving and the accidents and fatalities that can come about because of it, additionally in changing the standards identified with driving in the wake of drinking. Tipsy driving is no longer for the most part acknowledged in the public arena, offering ascend to assigned drivers and less plastered drivers on todays streets[9].

Essay --

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 was one of the most devastating times in the history of the United States of America, it plagued each city and town with starvation, homelessness and even suicide. The twenties were truly a tough time for the US and all of its citizens. The Roaring Twenties, the decade that came after World War I and inevitably led to the Wall Street Crash, came in a time where money and wealth were prevalent. Coming after the war, the United States had great confidence, a large amount of Americans who lived in secluded areas or small towns moved to the big cities to promote an industrial living style in the United States. While the American cities flourished and blossomed into the greatest places on earth, the amount of people who moved to the big cities left the agricultural ways of the US in the dust, leaving the farmers in economic shock, making agriculture the main reason for a major loss of money in the US. This happened throughout the decade and would later be blam ed as one the main factors that led to the 1929 stock market crash. Over the weekend of October 26th and 27th , the activity of the Stock Market was known and read all across the United States. On October 28, "Black Monday", a huge amount of investors decided to abandon the stock market in order to maintain their personal wealth, and the downfall erupted with a record loss in Dow Jones Industrial for the day of 38.33 points, or 13%.(Galbraith 47) The next day, "Black Tuesday", October 29, 1929, about sixteen million shares were traded, and Dow Jones lost an additional 30 points, or 12%, talk flurried that U.S. President Herbert Hoover would not veto the pending Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. The volume of stocks traded in order to maintain wealth or at... ...usinessmen in 1932 when things were just about at their worst. Squalid cardboard campsites were created in cities to live in...called "Hoovervilles". The nick-name of the soup given out by charities for the unemployed was "Hoover stew". However, Hoover did do some good. Money was used to create jobs to build things such as the Hoover Dam. In 1932 he gave $300 million to the states to help the unemployed (Emergency Relief and Reconstruction Act) but it had little impact as states run by the Republicans believed in "rugged individualism" more than Hoover did and they used only $30 million of the money offered to them. Which seems backwards, but they stood behind what they believed in and it ended out fine. The stock market crash of 1929 was the most significant crash in U.S. history. Although the crash itself only lasted four days, it led to a catastrophic sell-off.

Themes Of Bob Dylans Music Essay -- essays research papers

Bob Dylan was recognized by his poetry and song writing. He usually wrote songs about protesting and religious themes. Although the theme of Bob Dylan’s work is depressing, it is necessary to consider how the events in his life affected his music. Also Bob Dylan had other musicians that influenced him in his early years.Bob Dylan was born in Duluth Minnesota on the date of May 24th 1941. By the time he was ten years old he was writing poems and had taught himself to play guitar. He later changed his name from Robert Allen Zimmerman to the famous name Bob Dylan. In 1962 Bob visited his big early influence Woodie Guthrie in the hospital. Finally Bob Dylan got to meet him and become friends with his lost idol who was slowly dying of Huntington’s disease in Morristown, New Jersey, Dylan had written him a song called song to Woody. A famous quote from this song is â€Å"Bout a funny old world that’s coming along. Seems sick and it’s hungry, it’s tired and it’s torn, it looks like it’s dying and it’s hardly been born.†After he graduated high school in the early 1959 Dylan found himself playing folk music. This is also the time he began to write his legendary folk songs. In the 1960s Bob Dylan had turned the themes of his music to protest what many people consider the wrongs of society. In his songs he writes about the â€Å"luckless, the abandoned and’ forsaken,† as he put it in â€Å"chimes of Freedom.† He condemned the Ku Klux Klan in â€Å"The Death of Emmett Till† and the John Birchites in â€Å"Talking’ John Birch Paranoid Blues.† In Masters of War†he damned the war makers. And in Blowing’ in the wind, â€Å"he created probably his most famous song, though Dylan once stated that he wrote that song just for his friends. In fact, this anti racist, antiwar anthem is, in its deepest sense, a subtitle plea for awareness. (â€Å"How many times must a man look up/ Before he can see the sky? / Yes ‘n’ how many ears must one man have/ before he can hear people cry?†) Dylan had the characteristics of a biblical prophet, but also he had a sense of humor and irony (â€Å"Talking Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues†). One soon started to notice that he was a beginning to write songs that saw the world as consisting not just of heroes and villains but mostly cowardly people caught up in all-to-human situations. In the song â€Å"Who killed Davey Moore?† Dave Moore was a boxer who got killed by another boxer in... ...ngled Up in Blue,† â€Å"Idiot Wind,† â€Å"Simple Twist of Fate† and â€Å"Shelter From the Storm.† Dylan’s greatest album to date.In 1977 Dylan and Sara divorced and in 1978 he acted in the movie â€Å"Renaldo & Clara† and that same year converted to Christianity. In 1985 he performed at â€Å"Live Aid† and â€Å"Farm Aid† and contributed to â€Å"We Are the World.† In 1970 Dylan received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Princeton University. In 1988 Dylan was introduced to the R&R Hall of Fame. In 1991 Dylan received a Grammy Award for â€Å"Lifetime Achievement.† In 1997 Kennedy Center Honors Dylan for achievement in the arts. President Clinton stated, â€Å"He probably had more impact on people of my generation than any other creative artist.† In 1998 he was the winner of three Grammy awards in major categories for â€Å"Time Out of Mind†: The album of the Year, Best Male Contemporary Rock Vocal Performance, and Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2000 Dylan is awarded â€Å"The Polar Music Prize† by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music for his â€Å"indisputable influence on the development of 20th century popular music as a singer-songwriter. They also nominated Dylan for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and An Ode Popular Superstitions o

Comparing Unification in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and An Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands of Scotland  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      In A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Mary Wollstonecraft seeks to abolish repressive, orthodox conventions. She endeavors to abate manners that lacerate our society, that elevate man above woman, that prohibit equal exchange between the sexes. This unequal system of gender roles forms the basis of her argument. Wollstonecraft claims that civilization will not progress while half its population is subjugated. Arguing that progress in sexual commerce will balance the scales, she seeks simplicity in society through equality between man and woman. Through equal education, rejection of traditional expectations, but most importantly a dismissal of complex, debilitating emotions like love and passion, the sexes will overlap, becoming one, becoming unisexual. This simplification, this unisexuality, will clear the smoke between men and women, allowing them to return to a basis of reason upon which to build a better society. Wollstonecraft sees this unisexuality as the savior of human kind . In An Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands of Scotland, Considered as the Subject of Poetry, William Collins seeks to abolish cultural stereotypes rending Scottish and English societies. Collins realizes that if unabated, the rising 18th century commercial torrent will consume Scotland. This flood will leave the north hopelessly backward, unable to unite with the southern commonwealth. The growing cultural and economic gap between north and south will leave England ripe for conflict. Collins also realizes that the British Empire can never be a great power unless these two warring factions u... ...al level simplifies the conflict between the sexes because it eliminates the messy emotional biases attached to this conflict. Returning Scot and Brit to their ancient Celtic past simplifies the conflict between their nations because it eliminates messy emotional biases attached to this impasse as well. Both Wollstonecraft and Collins seek harmony through reason; both seek unity through precision, both succeed because simplicity speaks to everyone, Brit, Scot, man or woman. Human as a Complex Unit of Life Essay

The human body is a complex system of cells, most of which are grouped into organ systems that have specialized functions. These systems can best be understood in terms of the essential functions they serve: deriving energy from food, protection against injury, internal coordination, and reproduction. The continual need for energy engages the senses and skeletal muscles in obtaining food, the digestive system in breaking food down into usable compounds and in disposing of undigested food materials, the lungs in providing oxygen for combustion of food and discharging the carbon dioxide produced, the urinary system for disposing of other dissolved waste products of cell activity, the skin and lungs for getting rid of excess heat (into which most of the energy in food eventually degrades), and the circulatory system for moving all these substances to or from cells where they are needed or produced. Like all organisms, humans have the means of protecting themselves. Self-protection involves using the senses in detecting danger, the hormone system in stimulating the heart and gaining access to emergency energy supplies, and the muscles in escape or defense. The skin provides a shield against harmful substances and organisms, such as bacteria and parasites. The immune system provides protection against the substances that do gain entrance into the body and against cancerous cells that develop spontaneously in the body. The nervous system plays an especially important role in survival; it makes possible the kind of learning humans need to cope with changes in their environment. The internal control required for managing and coordinating these complex systems is carried out by the brain and nervous system in conjunction with the hormone-excreting glands. The electrical and chemical signals carried by nerves and hormones integrate the body as a whole. The many cross-influences between the hormones and nerves give rise to a system of coordinated cycles in almost all body functions. Nerves can excite some glands to excrete hormones, some hormones affect brain cells, the brain itself releases hormones that affect human behavior, and hormones are involved in transmitting signals between nerve cells. Certain drugs—legal and illegal—can affect the human body and brain by mimicking or blocking the hormones and neurotransmitters produced by the hormonal and nervous systems. Reproduction ensures continuation of the species. The sexual urge is biologically driven, but how that drive is manifested among humans is determined by psychological and cultural factors. Sense organs and hormones are involved, as well as the internal and external sex organs themselves. The fact that sexual reproduction produces a greater genetic variation by mixing the genes of the parents plays a key role in evolution.

Critical Analysis of Robert Frost

Benjamin Swan Prof. Bittenbender ENG208W: Studies in Poetry 04/14/13 Frost’s Metaphoric use of the Natural World in Poetry Born in San Francisco in the spring of 1874, Robert Frost is considered to be amongst, if not solely, the greatest poets in American history. Around age eleven, Frost moved to New England where the majority of his poetic inspiration is presumably drawn from. Although he never managed to obtain a collegiate degree, he did attend both Dartmouth and Harvard, two of the countries most prestigious universities.Publishing his first poem entitled â€Å"My Butterfly† in 1894, Frost began his career as a poet just as the modernist literature movement of the early twentieth century was gaining traction in the United States. Although Frost did not break from poetic convention as radically as some of his peers in the modernist movement, he is nevertheless considered a modernist poet in part due to the use of the New England vernacular that is present in the maj ority of his poetry.Another influence on Frost’s work as a poet comes from New England as well; this is the influence of growing up in New England’s natural landscape and the life he led on a farm there. Frost’s love for the natural and tendency towards including it in his writing is possibly the most distinguishable constant in his work. The following quote best describes this constant in his work, â€Å"As Frost portrays him, man might be alone in an ultimately indifferent universe, but he may nevertheless look to the natural world for metaphors of his own condition. † (The Poetry Foundation). The purpose of this paper will be to explore the some of the pieces in which Frost’s use of nature as a metaphor or simile for the human condition, as well as identifying the theme that the human race is alone in the vast universe where it occurs. Perhaps the best example of this recurring theme and Frosts use of nature as a metaphor can be found in his poem â€Å"Nothing Gold Can Stay. † In this piece, nature’s change from spring to summer is a metaphor for the loss of innocence in the world. Frost points to the fact that the world started out innocent when he opens by saying â€Å"Nature’s first green is gold† (Line 1).He glorifies our innocence by comparing it to the beauty of tree with golden buds just before they bloom. This observation and metaphor is true to the human condition as well, as we are born innocent. He continues on to describe how this doesn’t last for very long though when he says, â€Å"Then leaf subsides to leaf† (5). He then makes an allusion to the Bible about this loss of innocence in the following line, â€Å"So Eden sank to grief,† (6). As for the recurring theme, at the end of the poem man is left alone in the universe, stripped of innocence and disconnected from God.Another prime example of the recurring theme and frosts use of nature to illustrate his point can be found in his poem entitled â€Å"Desert Places. † In this poem the theme is clearly the loneliness and isolation felt by Frost. He uses nightfall during winter in the woods as a metaphor for loneliness. His description and figurative language paint a picture of the most lonely and isolated place imaginable, a wintry desert place. From here he lets the reader know that this place will only get more lonely before when he says â€Å"Will be more lonely ere it will be less† (10).After painting this picture of the most lonely place the reader can imagine, Frost concludes by saying that â€Å"I have it in me so much nearer home To scare myself with my own desert places. † (15, 16). This is where the recurring theme fits in; Frost internally is more concerned about his human condition where he finds himself alone in a vast universe that is indifferent to his existence. The entire poem sets up the delivery of these last two lines so that the reader can understand the significance of this theme to his life. The next poem examined is entitled â€Å"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. † Although Frost does use nature as a metaphor for the human condition in this poem, it’s theme is in stark contrast to the one found in â€Å"Desert Places. † In this poem, the woods in winter are a metaphor for isolation and solitude rather than loneliness. This could be for a couple of different reasons; perhaps it is the fact the speaker has the companionship of his horse. Either way, the poem begins in the woods as the speaker thinks back to civilization and the man whose property he is on. He notes that it is an nusual place to stop in the middle of the night since it serves no practical purpose and that his â€Å"horse must think it queer† (5). From here the speaker makes the observation that â€Å"The woods are lovely, dark and deep,† and takes a brief moment to enjoy the beauty, isolation, and solitude they offer befor e carrying on about his business (13). In contrast to the theme in â€Å"Desert Places† Frost appears to have found peace with the human condition in being alone in the woods that represent the vast and indifferent universe. Another poem that contains just one of the two constants being examined is entitled â€Å"Birches. In this poem Frost observes birch tree’s that have been permanently bent from the weight of winter snow and ice, this observation makes him nostalgic for the days he used to swing from the branches of these trees as a boy. He recalls being playing as carefree boy and the birch trees become a metaphor for his childhood innocence that he longs to have back. Near the end of the poem Frost writes, â€Å"It’s when I’m weary of considerations, And life is too much like a pathless wood† (44, 45) that he feels the most nostalgic for his carefree childhood. This statement makes the â€Å"pathless wood† a metaphor for the trials of a dulthood that are like cobwebs and twigs that poke you in the eye in untamed woods (45). He longs to escape the reality of trials and this can be seen in the line stating â€Å"I’d like to get away from earth awhile† (48). Although the recurring theme of the being alone in the vast universe does not present itself in this poem, the constant of nature as a metaphor can be found again in this piece. The final poem that this paper will examine Frosts use of nature as a metaphor and the recurring theme of the human condition is entitled â€Å"Out Out—. † In this poem Frost takes the reader to a logging community where the days work is coming to end. In this setting, nature is a metaphor for both the livelihood and mortality of a young man/older boy working with a chainsaw at a logging camp to make firewood. Frost paints the picture of beautiful landscape off of which the subject is making a living, but when he is distracted from his work he accidentally cuts h and nearly clean off.Even with the doctor’s best effort to try to save the boys life, the boy passes away during the operation. It is here that the recurring theme reveals itself when Frost writes, â€Å"No more to build on there. And they, since they Were not the one dead turned to their affairs† (33, 34). In this poem the bystanders represent the indifferent universe, they continue on with their lives, as the boy dies alone. In conclusion, the influence of the New England landscape has clearly played a huge role in Robert Frost’s life’s work as a poet. One is hard pressed to find a poem of his that does not contain some kind of metaphor inspired by the natural world surrounding him. Although the great poet does explore the recurring theme of the human condition where man is alone in the vast and indifferent universe, this theme is not nearly as constant as his metaphoric use of natural world. Frost was able to make a name for himself through this poetic style and will remain as one of the greatest American poets there ever was and will be.
